A smooth new driveway or parking lot may look like the most important part of a paving project, but the work underneath it often determines how long it will last. Before asphalt is installed, the site must be shaped, stabilized, and prepared so water moves away from the pavement instead of collecting on or beneath it. That is why asphalt drainage and accurate grading are essential parts of a durable paving project.
In Springfield and across Southwest Missouri, heavy rain, changing temperatures, and clay-rich soils can put paved surfaces under stress. When water has nowhere to go, it can weaken the base, widen cracks, create potholes, and cause sections of pavement to settle. A thoughtful plan for the ground beneath the asphalt helps protect the finished surface and the property around it.
Asphalt is built to handle traffic, but standing water and poor runoff can shorten its useful life. Small openings in the surface allow moisture to reach the aggregate base. Addressing these conditions before paving is usually more practical than trying to repair widespread settlement after the asphalt is installed.

Planning those elevations before paving helps reduce standing water and supports a cleaner, more professional property. It also gives striping, curbs, sidewalks, and entrances a better foundation for long-term performance.

If poor asphalt drainage has weakened large sections of the base, reconstruction may be the better long-term choice.
A reputable paving contractor should explain what is causing the damage and which option fits the condition of the pavement. The lowest initial price is not always the best value if it leaves the underlying water problem in place. A clear scope of work helps the property owner understand what will be corrected before new material is installed.
Drainage care continues after construction. Keep catch basins, curb openings, ditches, and swales clear of leaves, sediment, and debris. Redirect downspouts when they constantly discharge onto asphalt. Watch for new low spots and repair cracks before they allow more water into the base. Routine maintenance, including crack sealing and sealcoating when appropriate, can complement a sound drainage design.
After strong storms, take a quick walk around the property. Observing where water flows is one of the easiest ways to spot an emerging asphalt drainage issue before it causes extensive damage.
